REED RELAYS FOR PORTABLE EQUIPMENT

With portable and remote monitoring equipment, low power consumption can be very important to preserve battery life. Industry standard 0.2 inches wide Single in Line reed relays are typically 500 Ohms for a 5 Volt device so requiring 50mW of power, and small electromechanical relays can require 140mW or greater.

This can impact the overall power consumption resulting in portable or remote monitoring equipment requiring frequent replacement or recharge of the batteries. Pickering Series 100 and 101 have some of the highest coil resistances available in Single-in-Line reed relays. Up to 3300 Ohms for a 5 Volt device so requiring only 1.5mA of current, 7.5mW of power, 15% of standard reed relays and less than 5% of electromechanical relays. And with such low coil current requirements, they can often be driven directly by microprocessors, microcontrollers, and many other low output devices without the need for additional drivers.

Using the highest quality instrumentation grade reed switches, the high coil resistances reduce any heating effect from the coil giving excellent thermal EMF performance making them an ideal choice for very low signal levels, especially in data acquisition applications.

Recommended Reed Relays for Portable Equipment

Series 100 – Low Thermal EMF

Thermal EMF about 1 Microvolt or Less. 1 Form A, 2 Form A, 1 Form B & 1 Form C configurations. 3, 5, 12 or 24 V coils. Low power consumption, ideal for portable equipment.

The Pickering Series 100 is a complete range of Single-in- Line (SIL) reed relays primarily intended for direct drive from 4000B CMOS or NMOS logic or similar low current sources. They are also useful for applications where conservation of current is important, for example, battery powered equipment.

Series 101 – Direct Drive from CMOS

Direct drive from 74HC or HCT. Stacking on 0.3 inches pitch. 1 Form A, 2 Form A, 1 Form B & 1 Form C configurations. 3, 5, 12 or 24 V coils. Encapsulated in a plastic package with internal mu-metal magnetic screen.

The Series 101 have very high coil resistances. 5 Volt dry versions may be driven directly from 74HC or 74HCT logic without the need for additional drivers. 74HC logic will drive up to 4mA at 5 Volts, therefore a coil resistance of 1600 ohms is desirable to avoid running the IC at its maximum rating; 1600 ohms is the coil resistance of the single pole dry Series 101.

Series 118 – High Coil Resistance

Up to 15W switching. Sputtered ruthenium switches rated at 10W, 0.5 A or 15W, 1.0 A. 3 or 5V coils with a resistance up to 2200 Ω and optional internal diode.

The Pickering Series 118 is a range of very sensitive reed relays that are ideal for portable electronic instruments or other applications where low power consumption and a very small footprint is important.
