REED RELAYS FOR DATA ACQUISITION
In Data Acquisition (DAQ) applications, measurements need to be taken from a wide range of transducers and sensors, usually to be converted to digital information which is then suitable to be used by computer software or PLCs. For example, where thermocouples are used for temperature measurement or monitoring. These signals can be very low and reed relays are often the best choice to switch between the sensors and the data acquisition instruments.
It is important to have low and stable contact resistances and very low thermal offset voltages helping to mitigate any unacceptable errors that can be introduced when switching very low signal levels. Along with very low leakage currents and capacitance when compared to semiconductors, and hermetically sealed contact surfaces protected from oxidization when compared to electromechanical relays, all of these can be key factors for accurate measurements.
The Pickering Series 100 and 101 have very low thermal EMF performance, use instrument grade reed switches very low leakage currents making them the ideal choice in these sometimes demanding DAQ applications.
Recommended Reed Relays for Data Acquisition
Series 100 – Low Thermal EMF
Thermal EMF about 1 Microvolt or Less. 1 Form A, 2 Form A, 1 Form B & 1 Form C configurations. 3, 5, 12 or 24 V coils. Low power consumption, ideal for portable equipment.
The Pickering Series 100 reed relays are primarily intended for direct drive from 4000B CMOS or NMOS logic or similar low current sources, as well as data acquisition, or thermocouple switching. They are also useful for applications where conservation of current is important, for example, battery powered equipment.
Series 101 – Low Thermal EMF
High coil resistances up to 6000 Ω. Form A (energise to make), Form B (energise to break) & 1 Form C changeover configurations. 3, 5, 12 or 24 V coils. Direct drive from 74HC or HCT.
Series 101 stacks on 0.3 inches pitch. 74HC or HCT logic without the need for additional drivers – spacing PCB space. 74HC logic will drive up to 4mA at 5 Volts. 101-1-A-5/17D has the advantage of a lower level of thermal EMF of 3 microvolts or less. 1 Form A, 5V versions are ideal for battery powered portable equipment due to a coil current of only 1.7 mA.
